Frequently Asked Questions

What does a typical art psychotherapy session look like?

Well, for everybody it will look different. But generally it is a mixture of talking and art making. And some days it may be all talking, or all art making. I will encourage you to select some art materials and maybe give you a theme to focus on in your making, or not suggest anything at all and allow what ever is around to surface. I will always facilitate some time for reflection between us about what you have made to help encourage connection and insight.

How long does therapy take?

This can be hard to determine but is always discussed at assessment stage and therapy is regularly reviewed. Time taken in therapy depends on what it is you want to achieve and what time you are able to commit. You may have a distinct issue you want to work on or if the source of your concerns is not clear more time may be needed.

Can I take my art work home with me?

Usually work created in the therapy session stays with me and is stored confidentially. It can be useful to refer back to items made during sessions for further reflection. All items are yours and you are free to take them home with you when therapy is completed.

What art materials do you provide?

There is quite a mixture from crayons, pastels and charcoal, to paints of various types, inks, a variety of craft materials and clay and plasticine to name just a few. If there is a material you want that I don’t have I can source it for you.
